Award-Winning Project Featured on SRF Einstein

Overview

As part of my bachelor thesis, we developed an award-winning Google Glass head-up display that transforms smart glasses into a next-generation flight instrument for paraglider pilots. The system projects real-time flight data, airspaces, terrain, and obstacle warnings directly into the pilot’s field of view — dramatically improving situational awareness without distracting from the environment.

Powered by Flytec SensBox sensor data, offline map layers, and official Swiss aviation datasets, the HUD uses an aviation-inspired “Dark Cockpit” design, displaying information only when needed and escalating visual/audio alerts as pilots approach restricted zones or obstacles.

Tested extensively in real flights with experienced paraglider pilots, the prototype showed how wearable technology can raise safety standards and enhance the overall flying experience.

The project received the highest academic grade, earned multiple innovation awards, and gained national attention — including a feature on SRF’s science program Einstein and coverage in several Swiss newspapers.
